January Color Naming Contest!

Submit the Winning Name Selection and Win a Free Veil – in the Size and Weight of Your Choice!!

Apricot is probably my favorite color - if that is possible. I love the smoky way the colors interact to create it. Our Burnt Apricot is a warm rusty tone that we think you'll love.

This particular piece has a bit of a very gentle 'thick n thin' going on:

The top has thin Soft Apricot and thin Soft Geranium Pink going into the wider deeper Antique Rose and wider Burnt Apricot.

The feeling of this piece with thinner at the top and thicker at the bottom makes it feel warmer and richer - enveloping. It will be beautiful to dance with, the light catching highs and lows nicely.

This color palette is very popular with warm earth tones and pinks, the colors work with a wide array of costumes. Within fashion and costuming there is extensive need for deep apricots, pinks, and roses. Hopefully this color helps fill a much needed offering!

Help us come up with a name suitable for this pretty New Member of the Fairy Cove Color Family!

Meanwhile, we have added this lovely new colorstyle 'JANUARY NAMING SILK', Orderable in 5mm veil, 8mm veil, and of course, under any product on our site under 'nonstock colorstyle.'

You can submit your color suggestion at our website here. The contest will end January 25th.

Introducing Tequila Sunrise!

Here is Kista, Performing recently at the 3rd Belly Dance Fall Festival on Sunday, September20th, 2009 in Columbia City Community Hall, Columbia City, Oregon, and hosted by the talented Loma Linda Dancers.

We will post video soon on this event, as we attended as vendor. It was great fun!

The story below, comes from Faddah and took place at the event on 9/20/09 with our Fairy Cove veil of our new Tequila Sunrise:

Faddah writes via email after the event… ,

Hello Ladies!

Just to give you a little background. Kista choose Kaddish by Ofra Haza last Sunday because it is a prayer for the dead and Sunday was the 8th year anniversery of my husband's death. When you handed her the Tequila Sunrise veil she was almost undone because the Tequila Sunrise was a favorite drink for Steve. We talked about it later and we greed it was his way of saying "I am here". Thank you very much for you kindness and for having that particular veil on that particular day.

Tips for Dressing with SILK for Kids, Tweens & Teens

Shown Here is Teia, her Grandma and her stopped in to the Studio the other day...

The Tank jersey that we had was not adjustable and so we cut and resewed the straps so they crossed in the back for a better fit.

2 Piece garment and costume works great without additional layers, the silk is durable as regular clothing!

It was a real pleasure helping being a part of this moment. Developing confidence in body esteem is an important function of growing up - and an important responsibility for adults to impart to the children in their life. Bestowing beautiful silk gifts are a great and personal gift.
We do have some more available tanks in stock, non adjustable straps - inquire directly $15. I find people really enjoy these tanks for layering options.

More FAN VEILS

Well, another day of making Fan Veils. We have really spent a lot of time on creating a process so we can assemble them quickly. I am pleased with the quality, but have been concerned with how long it takes to handcraft this product! I think I am getting down to 10-15min/fan veil.. actual assembly time.

The quality is improving, tho we've only had rave reviews, we are pleased to feel settled in the process of assembly!!

To answer some questions.

1) Are they TWO-SIDED?
Yes, they are. Our fan veils have a secondary piece to cover the staves completely This is the FRONT PIECE. The BACK PIECE is the long veil itself. They are REVERSIBLE.

2) Should the FRONT PIECE MATCH? Only if you want it too. With the secondary piece of the cover, it gives a stronger presentation, which is why we feel it should be the 'front piece' the part you show to the audience. See the PARADISE SKY with CHOCOLATE FRONTS picture, below for high contrast. See the TROPICAL SUNSET for matched fronts.

3) Are there a LEFT and a RIGHT? Yes, there are. Remember, though, this really only matters depending on what your front piece is ... because they are fully reversible. The left fan will open inwards, the right fan will open inwards. The heavier part of the stave will be on the outside. You can interchange them, the biggest difference would be if you have high contrast front pieces.

4) Can the LENGTH be SHORTENED? Yes, simply trim it to the length you would like. There are no hems on the ends. The edges are woven the width of the fabric and have a selvage finished edge of 36inches.

5) What about the top edges of the fan -- square or round? Well, we have found we like the overhang at the top of the fan where it comes off of the staves. Sometimes we give it a gentle round trim if it seems like it would benefit from it. A minor detail, but one that is answered in person when you have your fan in hand.

6) What kind of designs are available? Call toll-free 1 877 655 2245 and I will tell you what is ready to ship OR email. You may order any colorstyle on the website at the link below, or custom order your colorstyle as you desire!

Back pieces with the veil were attached first. After quite a bit of practice, I can see my years working with silk paying off in the efforts of smoothing the fronts and back and attaching with the bamboo. They are so beautiful!

NEW FAN VEILS! LOTS OF PHOTOS/INFORMATION

There has been much excitement abuzz in the dance airwaves with our Fairy Cove Fan Veils!

We imported our own .... and are dyeing our sizzling colorstyles in all the ways you love.
Shown here is bright TROPICAL SUNSET with the top of the pattern at center running in a double vertical orientation. The mandarin at the outsides makes a beautiful flash of movement!

I think the most amazing thing is how they move!

This is ROYAL FANTASY, shown as the colorstyle will arrive to you as our stocked design style... running the length of the fan in a VERTICAL orientation. Note that the back piece on here looks a little more separate than our more newly finished fans.

This is DRAGON DREAMS in a one of a kind style, that has meadow closest to the hand. It has its deepest forest green starting 1/3 the way down the silk on the outsides so the pattern is dyed somewhat symmetrically from the inside to the out. This leaves Meadow heavy on the interior of the fan also.

When Ordering one of our colorstyles, keep in mind that the full coverage 'back piece' will standardly come with the 'top' of the pattern matching our photos.

Gauze, Chiffon and other fabric weaves can be made to make fan veils!

Currently the silk we are applying on these is a 5mm habotai, which we imported expressly for the fan veils. It is slightly floatier than our current 5mm habotai (you may likely be familiar with) we stock our standard ultralight veils on. It is generally being offered on a 60 inch veil. We also have 36x72 inch as a stocked item available if you prefer longer, these could be made into fan veils.

Silk Fan Veils have been laborious to create processes that will result in reliable assembly to create the highest quality, most durable accessory. Please order knowing that these are assembled in batches, requiring multiple days for the process and are on a limited basis.

Consider accessorizing any of your Fairy Cove Costume to Match or Coordinate, as our colorstyles are reliable to order. For perfect best matching, consider ordering together!
SILK FLOWERS are coming soon, too.....

Fairy Cove Silks New Studio in St. Helens, OR

Hello Silk Fans and Customers!

The last blog about moving from NC made me kind of sad, so I wanted to let everybody know we are doing well here in Oregon. It is good to be home in that the fertile NW is a beautiful place.

Well, we've gotten settled in the new digs! I like the open air layout, it is real flowing. And my back door opens to a creek and trees, which is inspiring me towards the heat processes cracked at the door. I feel organic silks coming soon.

We have lots of updates underway, watch for them shortly on the site:

We're carrying our own SALE and One of A Kind items - discounts do apply!!
We're adjusting ordering size options for petal skirts - you will love this!
We're adding Circle Skirts and a Full-leg Harem Pant shortly in 3 lengths!
We're updating our colorchart for better organization
We're adding information about how our colors coordinate for selecting and about our design styles so that communication will become easier!

We look forward to continuing to work with you and sending Silk to the far corners of the Earth to you!

Fairy Cove Silks Studio Relocates Back to Oregon

Meagan Maloney, Owner and Artist, Carries Specialty Silks Business Onward

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Meagan Maloney, owner and artist of local small business Fairy Cove Silks has moved the silk studio back to Oregon. Arriving just 10 months ago with husband, children, and studio in tow as a combined job move and family dream relocation to Greensboro. The family was hit hard when husband Michael Maloneys’ layoff came from his new local employer RF Micro Devices thus necessitating the return to Oregon for the family and business.

Fairy Cove Silks specializes in the artistic hand-dyeing of varied beautiful silk fabrics, offering a wholesome and creative product line of childrens’ dress up and imaginative educational silk toys, in addition to serving large niche markets of belly dance, women’s fashion, and interior décor. Their extensive services include personalized custom service of consulting, design, and sewing fabrication. A highly innovative and growing company, Fairy Cove has doubled in sales for four years, growing the business into a fully stand-alone production operation with its move to Greensboro. With the support of her husband, Meagan was able to launch a beautiful 2,000sf production studio centrally located and poised for growth in Piedmont Centre, located next to Mikhael’s Deli on Beechwood Drive, and employing a small dedicated staff.

Fairy Cove especially enjoyed the regions rich traditions of textile industry, having found a happy home here in North Carolina. As 99% of Fairy Cove’s business involves doing business online via its’ website www.fairycove.com and shipping globally, it is a loss to the local community as the companies’ future is so bright and fully anticipated becoming a productive and contributing member of the local art and business community. Just recently after many dedicated months of settling the daily operations of the local studio Meagan had begun canvassing the city and region for customers and businesses to partner with.

“Some of the business’ recent challenges have been the new CPSIA ‘toy’ legislation”, says Meagan, recently reported in the News & Record as a lead story in January 2009 which outlined the extensive difficulties small manufacturers of the US are currently facing with the poorly written new legislation. Thankfully, Fairy Cove’s “diversity of product line has continued to carry the business forward recently and allowed for continued growth in the dance markets of silk veil and costume as Fairy Cove Silks has emerged as a premier brand name serving the global dance community.”

Many factors contribute to closing of the Greensboro studio. While Fairy Cove actually showed steady growth through the fall in our shrinking economy, and even demonstrated record-breaking sales in January, the business is yet young, and provides only a portion of the families’ total income. The sponsored cross-country move for the family by RF Micro last year has been costly and full of much effort and multiple travel costs. When combined with the January layoff and RFMD’s offer of an additional paid return to Oregon, Michael and Meagan expressed that returning “seemed the safest course of action”.

Four of the families’ five children attended local schools -- Grimsley, Kiser, and Sternberger -- by the last name of Fuson. They will miss and be greatly missed by the welcoming faculty and community of parents and students. The family and children enjoyed the warmth of local community including many social summer activities at Green Valley Pool, and on into fall with the contagious patriotic school spirit of Grimsley where athlete scholar Daniel Fuson, a junior, played defensive lineman for Varsity Football and also placing just recently 2nd place at the Metro 4A conference winner as heavy-weight for the Grimsley wrestling team. Greensboro’s “green” shined on brightly with three children playing soccer through the fall on the lush fields of Bryan Park. It is with sadness we see this thriving happy family and business leave the good people of Greensboro. “Thank you Greensboro, the many thousands of wonderful people we’ve come to know --- for your ever warm and welcoming true Southern hospitality, we will miss you deeply!”

Plans for Fairy Cove are afoot for its relocation in hometown St. Helens, OR, just 30 minutes west of Portland along the beautiful Columbia River. The children are returning to their former schools and community, with mixed feelings of comfort and also some sadness and regret for leaving Greensboro. As the business has grown in size this past year, the time it has had expanding its infrastructure and operations will surely be of lasting benefit. Business will carry on, shipping to all destinations across the world.

For more information about Fairy Cove Silks and their innovative silk products for every use, please visit them on the web at: www.fairycove.com Meagan will continue to be available at the existing numbers 336.323.3644 or via email: silks@fairycove.com
